Perhaps you’ve heard recent statistics about youth leaving the Christian church; indeed, a 2019 LifeWay survey found that two-thirds of young people say they stopped regularly going to church for at least a year between the ages of 18 and 22. It’s something that pastors and ministry leaders have discussed at length over the last decade. But one aspect of college life we don’t often hear about is how often college students join cults. In fact, cults are campaigning and actively recruiting students on college campuses worldwide, and college students are susceptible to their deceptive and devious techniques. This isn’t a new phenomenon, but one aspect that has changed over the years is that cults have moved online, which potentially puts even more students at risk. Let’s talk about how cults recruit at universities and how students can safeguard themselves and their friends from predatory and manipulative groups.
