Does Time Heal All Wounds? (bE+)

6 min read

When I was a senior in high school, my grandfather died. Some well-meaning friends told me that, with time, I wouldn’t be so sad about it. In college, when my first boyfriend broke up with me, I felt like my heart really was breaking because of the grief, but my well-meaning friends told me that, with time, I’d be whole again. Several years ago, I experienced some difficult situations at a church, and again, well-meaning friends told me that, with time, I’d feel better about it. In a way, all of my friends were right. I don’t get the deep aches I used to when I think about losing my grandfather, my boyfriend breaking up with me, or being hurt by my church. That said, even as I write this, I miss my grandpa, and I feel physically ill remembering the church hurt. The boyfriend, well, I did actually get over him. I know so many of you can relate, either with my well-meaning friends who gave the assurance that time would make things better or as someone who has been on the receiving end and wondered if something was wrong with you if you still weren’t “over it.” So, let’s talk about time and grief.
