Finding Freedom After A High Control Religious Situation (bE+)

I’ve been studying cults and high control religious groups for a long time, and I’m always struck by a couple of things when it comes to survivors: 1) They are typically the most courageous people; and 2) They are free and may not know what to do with that newfound freedom. In this blog, I want to tackle the freedom issue because it really can become a safety concern if the survivor doesn’t have support and safeguards to establish boundaries and keep themselves from going too far in the opposite direction of their traumatic experience  (or heading in a similar direction because it’s familiar – not quite the same, but still harmful). New experiences can be something as small as trying foods they’ve never been allowed to eat before and as big as major life events like weddings or a move to the other side of the world. How can we help our survivor friends and family members navigate this freedom? And if you just stepped out of a high control situation, what should you do next? Let’s talk about it.
