Friends in the Trenches (bE+)

With Toy Story 5 recently released, I found myself thinking about the original Toy Story. What stands out to me most in the plot of the original Toy Story is the development of the friendship between Woody and Buzz. Buzz is Andy’s new toy, and he has a hard time adjusting to life in Andy’s room because he doesn’t know he’s a toy. This annoys Woody so much that he tries to sabotage Buzz. (Woody is also threatened by Buzz and fears that Buzz will replace him.) Ultimately, though, after a series of unfortunate events, Buzz adjusts to reality, and the two toys become best friends. I have to imagine that once Woody got over his own insecurities, he was able to help Buzz be the best toy to Andy he could be because he’d already walked that path of being the new toy in a strange land. Sometimes the people who help us most are the ones who have already learned how to survive where we’re just beginning.
