You’ve probably heard of undue influence, maybe involving wills and estates. A person dies, and it turns out that someone (usually a relative) exerted some sort of pressure on them to change their will before they died, conveniently to something that drastically benefits that relative who does the pressuring. Maybe they threatened they wouldn’t take them to appointments anymore or that they wouldn’t visit. Or maybe they told them that they deserved extra because of all the care they have shown. Whatever the case may be, the situation often ends up in court with the folks who thought they’d be inheriting, against the influencer. The question for the court is whether the influencer exerted “undue influence” on the person who died. If they did, the changes to the will won’t count, and the original beneficiaries win.
