My first memory of a pastor being removed from his position was Jimmy Swaggart, a popular televangelist in the 80s. The only reason I remember this is because I used to watch him every single morning during breakfast. I’d grab my “Adventures of the Gummi Bears” TV tray and plop down on the floor to consume Cheerios and the Word of God. At one point, I called Swaggart “Uncle Jimmy” -- that’s how often I watched him. And then, he was removed and defrocked by the Assemblies of God for a prostitution scandal (which, as an 8-year-old, I didn’t understand, but I heard the word “sex,” so I knew it was bad). He was no longer on TV, and he was summarily removed from my parents’ list of approved preachers.
