Author’s note: I use a couple of $10 words in this blog. Please don’t let that keep you from reading. They will be explained and defined so that by the end, you’ll not only understand them, but you’ll be able to use them at dinner parties and know what you’re talking about.
It’s probably not a surprise to you that the words of God have been misused and abused since the beginning. Think of Adam and Eve in the garden – the serpent misused God’s words and turned them against the Lord. In fact, Scripture warns us against people who will twist the Lord’s words for their own benefit. Consider Paul’s words in Acts 20: “I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them” (vv. 29-30).[1] Or Peter’s words in 2 Peter 3: “There are some things in [Paul’s letters] that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures” (v. 16). Or Jesus’s words in Matthew 24: “See that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray” (vv. 4-5).
